In this installment of the Album of the day series, I go a little bit off the subject of unknown albums and Jazz to get into more familiar things and Rock music.
Alice in Chains is an Alternative Rock band from the 90s. One of the bands that together with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and others; how would I say … “changed the lives” of many people of my generation in their teens.
This band, formed more exactly in 1987 in Seattle, Washington, and personally, is one of the ones I like the most from that Alternative Rock era. His signature heavily distorted guitar sound along with the unmistakable voice of Layne Staley and the choruses of Jerry Cantrell created an atmosphere that was sometimes melancholic, sometimes aggressive, and often a mixture of the two that appealed to listen to the music. I would dare to call the Alice in Chains sound the quintessential true Grunge sound. If you don’t believe me, listen to the album “Dirt” and then we’ll talk.
The album “Dirt” is the band’s second official album and one of those still available at an affordable price. My copy is a version of a single disc, reissued and remastered that went on sale in 2009 for Europe. I found it almost by accident, factory sealed, while searching through mountains of records at a small second-hand store in Milano, Italy.
To give you a better idea of the prices at which the albums of this band are, the first album is called “Facelift” and it is almost impossible to get. As far as I know, just 13 vinyl copies are being sold online right now and the least expensive copy is 90 Euros. We are talking about 90 Euros for an album that is quite used but can still be heard. And of these 13 copies, the two copies with an “almost impeccable” condition are valued above 300 Euros.
The high value of these albums is not only for the music. Original band singer Layne Staley died in 2002 of a drug overdose and that automatically increased the value. The band still continues to play with another singer who joined in 2006, William DuVall.
The members of the band in the album “Dirt” were:
- Layne Staley
- Jerry Cantrell
- Mike Starr
- Sean Kinney
In the “Virgin All-time Album Top 1000 List”, written by Colin Larkin, this album ranks 278!
