This time I bring an album that in a way marked the second half of the 1990s.
The album “Odelay” by Beck!
This album that was released in 1996 was the one that made Beck recognized worldwide. Produced by The Dust Brothers, the same producers of the Beastie Boys album “Paul’s Boutique”, the “Odelay” album is a musical mashup of varied genres such as Pop, Folk and Country, Grunge, Electro, Old-school Rap, Noise, Punk, Bossa Nova, Latin Soul and R&B. This mixture of genres made this album stand out in a musical world where Alternative Rock, Pop and Rap that were made in the early 1990s were beginning to decline.
Not surprisingly, the album “Odelay” won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album and Beck won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for one of the songs on the album.
In the “Virgin All-time Album Top 1000 List”, written by Colin Larkin, this album ranks 54!
We discovered this album in Cuba in 1998 thanks to a friend who brought the CD from Ecuador. I remember that we listened to it a lot and that I ended up recording it on a CD to have it. Saying this, I am going to present an interesting detail for many who have not been to Cuba. There the law against piracy is not respected. It is normal to find people on the street selling recorded music CDs and DVDs with series and movies downloaded from the Internet, with a printed cover also included. But of course, for the vast majority of the Cuban people, there is no other way to access all this. That is why it is allowed by the government, as a kind of “safety valve”.
The version I have is a European release from 2016 that I found in a store when visiting the Republic of San Marino last year. This album is pretty easy to find. It can be purchased on the Amazon website in Germany and on the Amazon website in the USA.
This and other vinyl albums can be found in our affiliate store. The list in this store is a personal and varied selection that can be purchased on Amazon. For now we only have the listing for the Amazon website in the USA and the Amazon website in Germany.
And to finish, as I usually do, I leave some videos of Beck’s album “Odelay” to enjoy.
